Fun-Stuff

It’s the perfect time of year again to get outside more with your dogs, and while walking around your neighborhood and playing in your backyard can be fun – there are various other places where your dog can run around while interacting with other people and dogs.

But before grabbing the leash and heading out to play, remember your dog must be up to date on their vaccinations, they should be able to play well with others – aggressive dogs shouldn’t go to the dog park – and you need to watch your pup and clean after them while at the park. Also, if it’s a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Parks and Recreation dog park, children under the age of 12 are not allowed in the park. Follow those rules and you and everyone else will have a more pleasant experience.

Here are some dog parks you can visit throughout the summer – if there has been inclement weather check the park’s website to make sure it is open before going.

Looking for a dog treat that you can make at home that your dog will love??  Try this dog treat recipe on for size!  I have made them many times for my pets and they keep coming back wanting another.  Now a days with all the food recalls making your pups treats are one way of knowing what they are eating 🙂

Tail Waggers

2 ¼ cups whole wheat flour

1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 ½ cups cornmeal

¾ cup uncooked regular oats

? cup instant nonfat dry milk powder

1 tablespoon garlic powder

½ teaspoon salt

1 ¾ cup beef broth

½ cup vegetable oil

2 large eggs

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Combine 1st 7 ingredients; make a well in center of dry ingredients.

Whisk together broth, oil, and 1 egg; add to dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.

Roll dough to ½ inch thickness on a lightly floured surface.  Cut with a 4-inch dog bone shaped cookie cutter or any shape you happen to have, and place on ungreased baking sheet.

Whisk together remaining egg and Worcestershire sauce; brush on cookies.

Position oven racks to divide oven into thirds.  Bake at 300 for 2 hours, placing a baking sheet on each rack.  Turn oven off, and let the cookies stay in oven with door closed 2 more hours.  Yield: 40 (4 inch) canine cookies.  A Southern Living recipe.

Don't ask me why... As pet sitters- of course we replenish water and food, go for walks , and play with "our" client's fur babies . But I think a great pet sitter always wipes away the gunk in the animals eyes before they say good bye. To me, It's like a good Mommy wiping their child's nose off. A good pet sitter will give hugs, check their paws to make sure the pets have no boo boos, and yes, wipe their eyes!  It seems silly but I always felt like my pet was cared for most when I was away when my pet sitter told me when my pet had a boo boo, or if their poo poo was looking funny, and when my pets face and eyes were clean.  I then felt like they were cared for with such love - like how a child is cared for.  And to me, animals are our fur babies!  It's caring for the animals with such care and concern that is noticed by all ... And I always try to keep this in my head whenever I service a client.  Remember ...wipe the gook off their eyes before you say good bye .... It shows how much you care about that little fur baby!

To me being a pet sitter is so much more than watching over someone’s dogs.  A good pet sitter cares for someone else’s dogs as if they were their own animals.  I pet sit on a part-time basis, and I do it because I care about the animals and their families.  I miss “my” dogs when I don’t see them, and I am always trying to go above & beyond to ensure they are comfortable when their families are away.  I was a client before I became a pet sitter, and the pet sitters who have gone the extra mile over the years are the ones who stand out in my mind and my heart.  It gives me great joy to go that extra mile for the animals and their families.  I will send funny text pictures and really put my heart into it.  And, yes I admit I spend a lot of my free time sometimes putting small videos or pictures together—but it brings me such happiness to do it for others.  Just today I made 2 clients (so far) Mother’s Day pictures that I will make into Mother’s Day cards to give them from their fur babies.  I do it because it gives me as much joy giving these tokens of appreciation as I am sure it does to my clients who receive them.
